Five Days

Five days and one hour from now, the Dayton High School Marching Band will be wrapping up warmups for their first competition of the season and headed to the performance field.  You can look forward to a few things in this first performance:

1) The students will be nervous.  We know how all kids get in front of large crowds.

2)  The performance will be one tune short of finished.  Instead of rushing to put all the drill on the field and then slop our way through it, we are taking our time to clean things as we go.  It should still be quite rough in patches, as some of our younger participants get used to the idea of doing this in front of a crowd, but I feel it is much improved.

3) A small, redefined Marching Band.  We have gone through much adversity this summer, and what we have to show for it is 17 members in the marching band.  A change in philosophy, attitude, and sense of purpose has, for the lack of a better way to say it, weeded out those who weren't up to snuff.  Many of those not with us any more have decided that they needed to focus on their studies, and kudos to them.  We all know that getting your grades up and becoming a better student will do more for someone than struggling through rehearsals worrying about the math test coming up.  Some have moved away, while others chose not to continue with marching band all together.

4) A few kids on the sideline injured.  We have had the worst case of ankle injuries known to man.  Including yours truly.

All these obstacles have not stood in the way, however, of a renewed sense of dedication and pride in what this program is about.  "It's about quality, not quantity," one of the students said.  We will have a quality program again, with superior individuals looking to better themselves in every aspect of their lives.

See you at Beechwood.  We perform at 12:45pm.  Make a day of it and stay with us for finals that night as well.

Can't wait for the season to begin! I know that many of you students are nervous about performing in front of a huge crowd, but over time, you'll learn to love the shout-outs of support from those of that are able to attend, and it will come natural to you as your season progresses. Although it's great to win trophies, it's also nice to know that over the past 6 years, the bands and some of their parents, have become friends along the way. Any student who reads this needs to know that you have the support of many other bands, from all Classes, that support you, clap and root for you, and are of great support to all of the band members and their familes, both on and off of the field.
So when you, our 2009 Marching Band Students come down those long steps from the back of Beechwood High School this coming Saturday, down to the field, and after the announcer says, "And now entering the field for compeition, DAYTON HIGH SCHOOL, from Dayton, KY.", you'll know that not only we'll be there in the stands for you, but many other parents and students from several other bands like Beechwood, Williamstown, Lee County (Even though they are not performing this year), Highlands, Bellevue, and many other bands, will be there supporting all of you all the way through to the end of your performance. You've got great backing from a lot of people, so just go out there and do your best. Just take a deep breath, and do what you've been taught to do.
To the Color Guard....., You may be small in size, but you've have a great instructor this year, and just follow her lead. You've all done your routine over and over again, so just look up into those stands, and know that we'll be there along with all of your other supporters!!!
Good luck to the entire Dayton High School Marching Band this season. You'll be making lasting memories and friendships that will last forever, and come away knowing that you did your best. You may have some bumps along the way, or a flag may drop, but just keep on going and do your best. The Dayton H.S. Marching Band Students will always have a place in our familys' heart, no matter what field you're performing on, and wahtever the outcome is at the end of this season, we'll be there for all of you! Good Luck!!!!!!
